Levitation is the process by which an object is held up into the air, without any mechanical support, in a stable position. The act of levitation is accomplished by providing an upward force that counteracts with the pull of gravity. Levitation or transvection in the paranormal context is the rising of a human body and other objects into the air by mystical means. Some people believe that levitation is the result of supernatural action of physic power or spiritual energy. The art of levitation exists both in India and Tibet. There are a lot of records about the spiritual act of levitation in isolated native tribes in South America. Although most acts of levitation are mostly done through isolated Buddhists in the Himalayan mountains and Hinduism scholars in India, there are some incredible historical records of levitation, even in Europe. Among Christian documents, that over 200 Catholic Saints have been proclaimed with the powers of levitation. One of the more remarkable and accountable acts and documented accounts of levitation were of Saint Joseph of Cupertino. Born in 1603 in Italy, he was born in a stable, was not well educated, but was considered to be quite wise. Cupertino fasted for 40 days, seven times a year and was able to communicate with animals. He was said to have achieved his ability of levitation after over two decades of intense spiritual practices.
In yoga, it is believed that some yoga and meditation masters who have these unique special powers are known as siddhis, and they can levitate at will. The power of levitation in the Sanskrit language of yoga is known as dardura siddhi which means frog power. This is because some frogs are known to jump and suspend themselves in the air. There have been many witnessed accounts and first-hand stories of great yogis and levitation achieved through the use of special powers through meditation and advanced yoga practices. Some of the great yoga texts proclaim that when a person is proficient in the science of both yoga and pranayama which is the expansion of energy by breath control, one can also learn the act of levitation. So, to learn how to levitate a person should first start with learning about meditation to be more familiar with their body and feel their prana or life force and energy. A person can start with a seated practice of mediation or by the laying down the practice of yoga nidra. Next, you want to understand the various pranas or the vayus within the body. There are five main vayus, and these are responsible for governing the movements and the actions of both the mind and body. It is believed that by knowing and controlling the vayus, that a person can master the art of levitation.
The five main pranas within the body are described as the following. Prana Vayu which is what draws energy inward and is responsible for inhaling, swallowing and sensory perception. Vyana Vayu which is what diffuses energy away from the body and is also responsible for overall movement and circulation. Samana Vayu which is known to draw energy towards the center and is responsible for digestion, homeostasis, and metabolism. Apana Vayu which descends the energy downward and out and is also responsible for elimination, downward movement and reproduction.
